Spanish Version: COVID-19 en Tennessee: El número de personas hospitalizadas por COVID-19 es mayor que nunca

November 25, 2021

The Tennessee Department of Health reported a continued rise in the number of new and active COVID-19 cases over the past seven days for the third week, but hospitalizations remained largely stable.

Roughly 9,600 new COVID-19 cases were reported over the past seven days between November 17 to 23 across the Tennessee -- up by 1,000 from the week prior. Active cases grew from 13,225 on Nov. 17 to 14,386 as of Nov. 23.

A total of 740 people across the state were hospitalized as of November 24, up slightly from 694 last week.

The number of deaths over the past seven days also slight increased.  A total of 180 Tennesseans died to COVID-19 between Nov. 17 to 23, and a total of 16,967 have died since the start of the pandemic.

November 18, 2021

The Tennessee Department of Health reported a continued rise in the number of new and active COVID-19 cases over the past seven days for the second week.

Roughly 8,600 new COVID-19 cases were reported over the past seven days between November 11 and 17  across the Tennessee -- up by 800 from the week prior. Active cases have also increased, up from 11,240 on November 9 to 13,225 as of November 17.

A total of 694 people were hospitalized as of November 18, down from 729 from last week.

The number of deaths over the past seven days slightly decreased. A total of 141 Tennesseans died to COVID-19 between Nov. 11 to 17, and a total of 16,796 have died since the start of the pandemic.

November 11, 2021

The Tennessee Department of Health reported a slight rise in the number of new and active COVID-19 cases over the past seven days, the first such rise since cases began declining in mid-September.

Because this is only one week and the increase is slight, it's too early to tell if this will become a trend. Doctors are preparing for the possibility of another increase in cases over the holiday season, but this is expected in any case due to people traveling and gathering indoors more to stay out of the cold.

Public health experts said they do not expect a new surge to be as serious as the past ones, due to the majority of people now having some level of vaccinated immunity and natural immunity.

Roughly 7,800 new COVID-19 cases were reported over the past seven days between November 3 and 9  across the Tennessee -- up by 700 from the week prior. Active cases have also increased, up from 10,850 on Nov. 3 to 11,240 as of November 9.

A total of 729 were hospitalized as of November 11, down from 840 last week.

The number of deaths over the past seven days slightly increased, up from 160 last week.

November 4, 2021

The Tennessee Department of Health reported current COVID-19 hospitalizations have fallen below 1,000 for the first time since the record summer surge that began in July, and new cases continue to drop week-over-week.

Just short of 7,000 new COVID-19 cases were reported across Tennessee in the 7-day period between October 28 and November 3, which is down by more than 1,000 cases from the week prior.

TDH reported continued declines in the number of people concurrently hospitalized-- with 840 people in the hospital for COVID-19. That's down by roughly 180 people from the past seven days when the number was 1,021.

Some particularly good news in the area: the number of people being admitted to the hospital for COVID-19 daily has generally fallen into the single digits for the first time since late June. There has yet to be a day since March 18, 2020 where Tennessee saw zero people hospitalized for COVID-19 (the closest was on June 18, 2021, when the state reported one new hospitalization).

One somber note: the decline in hospitalizations has been mirroring the number of deaths reported recently, particularly in the past few weeks as new hospitalizations and cases have receded. While hospitalizations fell by roughly 180 people, 160 new deaths were reported in the past seven days. A total of 16,482 Tennesseans have died to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.

October 28, 2021

The Tennessee Department of Health continued to report steady declines in the number of new and active COVID-19 cases.

TDH reported a total of 8,175 new cases in the past seven days, down by close to 2,000 from the week prior. A total of 13,999 active cases were reported across the state, down by roughly 5,000 from the past week.

Declines in the number of people hospitalized continued for another week with 1,021 people hospitalized across the state as of October 28. That's down by 300 from the 1,321 hospitalized the week prior. Of those, 327 are in the ICU and 212 are on ventilators -- meaning roughly a third of all hospitalizations now are people with serious COVID-19 infections.

218 more Tennesseans died to COVID-19 over the past seven days, bringing the total number of deaths since the pandemic to 16,322.

October 21, 2021

The Tennessee Department of Health on Thursday reported active COVID-19 cases fell by roughly another 8,000 people in the past week as hospitalizations and new cases continue to steadily decline.

TDH reported a total of 10,444 new cases in the past seven days -- down by roughly 4,000 compared to the week prior. Total active cases as of October 20 sat at 18,589 -- down by roughly 8,000 people from last week.

Declines in the number of people hospitalized across the state have slowed down, with ICU and ventilator cases indicating hospitals are still dealing with a large number of patients with life-threatening infections. Overall, the number of people hospitalized declined from 1,629 to 1,321 patients across the state -- down by roughly 300. The decline in hospitalizations does not necessarily mean those people recovered, as people who die to COVID-19 in the hospital also reduce that statistic -- and nearly 300 more people died to COVID-19 this week.

At the peak of the summer surge in mid-September, 1,089 patients were in the ICU for COVID, and 701 were on ventilators. Those numbers have been much slower to decline in comparison to overall hospitalizations this past month -- now sitting at 432 ICU cases and 274 people on ventilators, down by 100 each from the week prior.

A total of 312 more people died to COVID-19 in the past 7 days. That number is slightly up from the prior week's 292 deaths. A total of 16,104 Tennesseans have died to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.

October 14, 2021

The Tennessee Department of Health on Thursday reported active COVID-19 cases fell by another 6,500 patients in the past week as hospitalizations and new cases continued to decline over the past month.

The department reported 14,735 new cases across the state in the past week -- down by roughly 4,000 new cases from the week prior. Active cases as of October 12 have fallen by roughly 6,500 cases -- down to 26,667.

The number of people currently hospitalized across the state fell by another 500 patients in the past seven days -- down to 1,629 as of October 13. Serious cases in the ICU and those requiring ventilators fell to 551 in the ICU and 372 on ventilators -- down by roughly 100 each.

Another 292 Tennesseans died in the past seven days, down from 358 deaths the week prior. A total of 15,734 Tennesseans have died to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.

October 7, 2021

The Tennessee Department of Health on Thursday reported continued declines in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations as the number of deaths from September continued to rise.

The department reported 18,436 new COVID-19 cases in the past seven days, down by more than 6,000 from the week prior. Active cases as of October 6 have fallen by roughly 10,000 cases in the past week -- down to 33,096 total active cases.

The number of people currently hospitalized across the state fell by roughly 500 -- down to 2,157. However, serious cases in the ICU and requiring ventilators remained high across the state. 684 patients were in the ICU and 452 were on ventilators -- down by roughly 100 patients each from the week prior.

Reported deaths continued to grow, but deaths are a "lagging indicator" that take time to formally report in COVID-19 statistics because of the death certification process, sometimes weeks or upward of a month after they occurred. A total of 358 new COVID-19 deaths were reported this week -- down slightly from last week. At least 1,500 people across the state died to COVID-19 in September -- nearly tying November for the third-deadliest month of the pandemic.

September 30, 2021

The Tennessee Department of Health on Thursday reported COVID-19 numbers are continuing to fall for a third week, with active cases down by another 20,000 people.

The TDH reported a total of 24,721 new COVID-19 infections in the past week, down by roughly 7,000 cases from the week prior. Active cases fell to nearly 43,000 cases as of Thursday -- which as of Sept. 22 had stood at 62,500.

Credit: WBIR

The number of people currently hospitalized across the state fell by more than 300 to 2,630. However, the number of people in the ICU and on ventilators remains high and has not fallen at the same pace -- with many ICUs remaining nearly full of COVID-19 patients. As of Sept. 29, 801 people remained in the ICU across the state, which was down from 918 last week. 545 were on ventilators -- down from 678.

The number of new deaths reported in the state over the past seven days fell to 411. A total of 15,149 Tennesseans have died to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.

September 24, 2021

The Tennessee Department of Health on Friday reported continued large declines in the number of new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, but the large toll the virus has taken during the summer surge is becoming more apparent as the number of new deaths reported this week from the virus continued to climb and ICUs across the state remain filled.

In the past seven days, TDH reported 31,677 new COVID-19 cases, which is down significantly by more than 20,000 cases from the previous week. Active cases -- which were reported to be more than 62,500 just two days ago -- have fallen to 56,473 as of Friday. For comparison, active cases in Tennessee fell as low as 720 people on June 21 prior to the summer surge of the Delta variant.

Credit: WBIR

A total of 2,968 people are currently hospitalized for the virus across the state as of Friday, down by close the 600 concurrent hospitalizations a week ago. However, the number of ICU and ventilated COVID-19 patients did not decline as steeply. Of the current hospitalizations, 918 remain in the ICU and 678 were on ventilators.

This week, the state reported 484 more Tennesseans died from COVID-19 -- up by more than 70 deaths from last week. A total of 14,825 Tennesseans have died to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.

For context, state and local health departments have said deaths are a "lagging statistic" throughout the pandemic, saying deaths typically happen weeks after serious infection and aren't immediately reported because it takes time to certify and report deaths.

During the winter 2020-21 surge -- the number of COVID-19 deaths reported in Tennessee spiked to record levels in the first week of February, which was more than a month after new cases in the state began receding. However, health departments said these deaths actually occurred weeks to sometimes a month before they were formally reported in daily statistics, with January and December being the deadliest months by far with more than 2,500 people dying to COVID-19 in each of those months.

September 16, 2021

The Tennessee Department of Health reported declining COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations Thursday for the first time in months, a positive sign the summer surge which began in early July might be receding.

In the past seven days, TDH reported 52,622 new COVID-19 cases -- down by roughly 2,600 cases from the previous seven-day period.

A total of 3,596 people were concurrently hospitalized for COVID-19 as of Thursday, down by roughly 200 from last Thursday. Of those, 1,049 were in the ICU and 757 were on ventilators.

A total of 411 Tennesseans died from COVID-19 in the past seven days, up by nearly 100 from the previous week. A total of 14,289 people in the state have died since the start of the pandemic.

TDH said numbers are declining largely in West Tennessee -- where it saw its summer COVID-19 outbreaks a few weeks earlier than Middle and East Tennessee. TDH said it's hopeful this pattern will follow across the entire state in the coming weeks.

September 9, 2021

The Tennessee Department of Health continues to report record hospitalization levels this week.

In the past seven days, TDH reported 55,261 new cases of COVID-19 -- roughly 5,000 cases higher than the previous seven-day period.

A record 3,798 people are currently hospitalized for COVID-19 -- up from 3,501 from last Thursday. Of those cases, 1,069 people are in the ICU and 744 are on ventilators.

A total of 325 Tennesseans died from COVID-19 in the past seven days. 13,879 people in the state have died since the start of the pandemic.

September 7, 2021

More people are sick with COVID-19 than ever before in Tennessee with a record 88,940 active cases statewide. The Tennessee Department of Health said roughly 1 in every 75 Tennesseans has the virus right now.

Tennessee also reported more new cases than ever before with 13,506.

Hospitalizations continue to rise as well across the state with a record 3,693 patients.

1,034 are in the ICU, and 723 are on a ventilator. 67 of those hospitalized are kids.

TDH also reported 235 new deaths in the last week.

September 2, 2021

There are more adults and children in the hospital for COVID-19 than ever before, and the rate at which people are being hospitalized for the virus continues to break records.

The Tennessee Department of Health reported another 160 new concurrent hospitalizations -- the largest single-day jump seen since the pandemic began. A total of 3,501 COVID-positive patients are currently hospitalized, up from 3,338 from Wednesday.

A total of 968 people are in the ICU and 667 are on ventilators, both new records. 79 children are hospitalized -- tied for the all-time high seen on August 30.  A record 21 children are in the ICU for COVID-19, and 8 are on ventilators.

A total of 1,196 beds are available in hospitals across the state -- roughly 11% remaining. TDH reported 114 ICU beds are available, which means roughly 5.5% of space in the ICU remains.

UT Medical Center on Thursday announced it is limiting visitors into the hospital due to the continued record surge of new COVID-19 patients.

Governor Bill Lee and TDH Commissioner Dr. Lisa Piercey held a press conference Thursday to discuss the record rise in hospitalizations

"Our hospitals are in dire straits," Piercey said, noting hospitalizations have now exceeded the worst of the winter peak.

Piercey said close to 90% of all patients that have been hospitalized for COVID-19 are unvaccinated. She continued to urge people to get vaccinated, with Lee repeating he thinks all Tennesseans should consider getting the COVID-19 vaccine.

"Sometimes it's easy to think, 'That's a hospital problem, that's a state problem, that's somebody else's problem.' It's actually everyone's problem," she said.

Piercey also reminded people that monoclonal antibody treatment is now more widely available at hospitals across Tennessee for people who've recently been infected with COVID-19, but emphasized patients need to receive it shortly after the initial infection for it to be effective. The treatment is available to children as young as 12 years old.

RELATED: Where can I find monoclonal antibody treatment for COVID?

Of the more than 50,000 new COVID-19 cases reported in the past 7 days, Piercey said nearly 40% were among children. Governor Lee emphasized his position is that parents should be the ones to make the decision to mask children in schools, but admitted districts can still enforce mask mandates -- so long as districts continue to offer the option for parents to opt their children out of the mandate per his recent executive order. Lee characterized the conflict between people calling for school mask mandates and those against masking as "complicated."

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows Tennessee is now the worst state in the U.S. for 7-day new COVID-19 positives per capita, reporting 15,540 cases per 100,000 people as of September 2. TDH reports 42% of people statewide are fully vaccinated, well behind the national average of nearly 53%.

September 1, 2021

There are more people hospitalized for COVID-19 right now than ever before. The Tennessee Department of Health reports 3,338 current hospitalizations for the virus in the state.

The number of people on ventilators (661) and in the ICU (943) also set records Wednesday. Statewide, TDH reports there are only 99 available ICU beds. That’s less than 5 percent.

August saw the most school-aged children testing positive for the coronavirus with 39,842-- 61.9% higher than the previous peak.

New daily coronavirus cases in Knox County in August rose more than 500%. The county reported 69 positive tests on July 31 and 479 on August 31.

Local hospitals teamed up to release a joint statement, asking those eligible to get vaccinated against the coronavirus and telling patients to expect longer wait times in Emergency Rooms.

Hospitalizations continue to rise as well across the state with 3,159 patients.

907 are in the ICU.

An all-time high 605 are on a ventilator.

72 of those hospitalized are kids, an all-time high.

Week of August 26, 2021

The COVID-19 situation in Tennessee continues to worsen after the state health department reported continued week-over-week increases in new cases, concurrent hospitalizations and deaths.

Should the increases continue, the state is poised to surpass records set during the winter surge.

On Thursday, the state reported a total of more than 1 million infections since the start of the pandemic.

In the past seven days, the Tennessee Department of Health reported a total of 44,024 new COVID-19 cases -- up by more than 10,000 this week from the previous week's 33,645 new cases.

The number of people concurrently hospitalized rose by roughly 250 more people from the previous week to 2,802 as of Thursday. COVID-19 patients in the ICU have surged to record levels at 877, prompting the Tennessee National Guard to send members to 13 hospitals and medical centers across the state to support them -- including Blount Memorial and UT Medical Center.

COVID-19 patients in the ICU hit record levels the week of August 26, 2021.

In the past seven days, 212 more Tennesseans have died to COVID-19. A total of 13,235 people have died to COVID-19 in Tennessee since the start of the pandemic.

Week of August 19, 2021

A new report from the Vanderbilt Department of Health Thursday shows Tennessee has reached record growth in COVID-19 hospitalizations, reaching rates higher than at any point in the pandemic as the Delta variant continues to spread rapidly.

The Vanderbilt report said intensive care resource use for COVID-19 patients is at 91% of its previous peak, and trends suggest if the growth in hospitalizations continues at the current rate, Tennessee might soon eclipse its record ICU and ventilation use reported in January.

The Tennessee Department of Health on Thursday reported 2,449 current hospitalizations, up from the 2,107 concurrent hospitalizations reported a week prior.

A total of 33,645 more people tested positive for COVID-19 in the past seven days, bringing the total number of cases up to 969,998 as of August 18. The rate of new cases continues to grow alongside hospitalizations.

Credit: WBIR

The Vanderbilt report said the growth in cases is happening in both vaccinated and unvaccinated people, but said that growth is far higher in the unvaccinated and that very few of the breakthrough cases seen in vaccinated people have reached the level of severity seen in unvaccinated people.

"Unlike early January 2021, safe and effective vaccines against COVID-19 are now widely available to the public that could stem the spread of the virus and the surge in hospitalizations that is now threatening the health of all Tennesseans due to staffing shortages, hospital diversions, and stretched resources," the Vanderbilt report said.

Week of August 13, 2021

The Tennessee Department of Health reported a total of 27,390 new cases of COVID-19 in the seven-day period between August 6 and August 12, bringing the total number of cases up to 936,614 across Tennessee since March 2020.

COVID-19 hospitalizations have begun to rapidly rise alongside the new cases, alarming doctors as ICUs suddenly began filling up again across the state.

TDH Commissioner Dr. Lisa Piercey said the vast majority of serious COVID-19 cases that hospitals have seen over the past few weeks -- nearly 97% -- are occurring in people who haven't been vaccinated. Piercey said 98% of all recent COVID-19 deaths also happened in people who hadn't been vaccinated.

As of Friday, TDH reported 2,107 concurrent hospitalizations -- up from the 1,326 concurrent hospitalizations reported on July 31.

This is a significant improvement from one month ago, when the COVID-19 positivity rate hovered around 20%. Tennessee typically reports between 20,000 to 30,000 new tests daily on average, and the average positivity rate has been on a steady decline since hitting a peak above 30% in late December.

This rate, along with the 14-day rate of influenza-like illnesses (ILI) and COVID-like illnesses (CLI) reported at ERs, will be a metric that will come back into prominence soon. For months, the positivity rate went well beyond the red line into "too high" -- as anything beyond 10% positivity in a community is generally considered to be unchecked spread and requiring the greatest levels of intervention to curb it. Tennessee's "green line" rate is anything below 5%.

In the early months of the pandemic when reopening phases were still part of the discussion, the White House Coronavirus Task Force, CDC and other health departments looked for decreasing or near-zero trends in this 14-day positivity rate as a sign to move forward with reopening businesses. When schools reopened, the CDC targeted a threshold lower than 3% in 14 days for keeping the risk of infections spreading low in classrooms.

A total of 1,492 people are currently hospitalized for the virus, down by 55 from Tuesday. This is down to levels not seen since November, and this steady downward trend in hospitalizations has continued for nearly a month, which is a positive sign as the vaccine rollout continues to slowly ramp up.

Dr. Lisa Piercey, Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Health, said the disparity between the current rise in deaths but continued decrease in average new daily cases and hospitalizations is due to a nearly month-long lag in reporting time that occurs after the onset of a deadly infection. People with life-threatening COVID-19 infections can be hospitalized for weeks before death as ICUs exhaust all options to save them. On top of that, it can take up to three weeks to certify and process the person's death certificate before it's reported in the state's daily data.

Given this lag, she expects the number of deaths will reflect the current downward trends seen over the past month in the next week or two.

March 20, 2020 : As of Friday, March 20, the State of Tennessee is officially reporting 228 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, according to the Tennessee Dept. of Health. However, several other counties are reporting additional cases locally that are not yet included in the official state count.

Officially, there are 17 cases reported in East Tennessee, including 3 in Knox County and new cases in Cumberland, Anderson, Blount, Greene, and Hamblen counties.

Dr. Marha Buchanan with the Knox County Health Department said Friday there are four new confirmed cases in Knox County, which would bring the total to six.

The Monroe County mayor posted on Facebook that there were two cases in that county on Friday.

The Scott County mayor also reported the first case in that county on Friday, as well as one in Cocke County reported by the local EMA.

On Friday, Scott County Mayor Jeff Tibbals posted on Facebook that the county had its first confirmed case. Tibbals said the confirmed case and the family has been in self-quarantine for a week and that contact with others should have been minimal.

Morristown Mayor Gary Chesney also posted Friday on Facebook that the first case of coronavirus has been confirmed in Hamblen County. He said the person is self-isolating.

Also on Friday, the Cocke County Emergency Management Agency posted on Facebook about a confirmed case there.

On Thursday,  Anderson Co. Mayor Terry Frank said that the county had its first case after the Anderson County Health Department advised her that a person tested positive for COVID-19, though that is not listed in the state's official count.

Those increasing number of cases in East Tennessee are what prompted the Knox County Health Dept. to close bars and limit seating in restaurants and the Knoxville mayor to close gyms, bars, restaurants, and public event venues in the city. Restaurants can still provide carryout and delivery.

The most confirmed cases are in Davidson County, home to Tennessee's largest city, Nashville. There are 101 confirmed cases there.

On Friday, Greene County had one reported case -- a student at Tusculum University. The university said it was notified Friday morning that a student had tested positive, and that it would be closing student residence halls and telling nonessential personnel to work remotely.

There's a new category of cases on the state website that's called 'residents of other states/countries.' State health officials said cases are being reported by a patient's county of residence.

For example, the state said if a person was a resident of Davidson County and happened to be in another Tennessee county where they became ill, assessed, tested, and were confirmed to have COVID-19 — then this case would be counted as a Davidson County case rather than a case in the county where they tested positive.

The second Knox County case was reported Tuesday but officials said that the second case reported in Knox County was someone who did not actually live in the county, saying the new case was reported locally because of how the CDC tracks patients.

According to KCHD, the second case lived out of country and was tested in another state. They said the case was reported locally, though, based on their address on record. KCHD said it is trying to work with the State Health Department and CDC to change that report.

“TDH will release counties of residence for all confirmed cases, but will not include further identifying factors like age or gender as we balance transparency with our obligation to lawfully protect patient privacy,“ said Tennessee Health Commissioner Lisa Piercey, MD, MBA, FAAP. “While the department’s standard protocol for outbreaks is to announce information by region, we understand COVID-19 is an evolving situation presenting unique concerns for our communities.“
