Save Me a Dime: Ways to save on clothes you want and profit off what you get rid of

Getting a new wardrobe can get expensive, but there are ways to make it work.

From work to play and head to toe, we live in our clothes every day. We want to help you save a dime as you freshen up your wardrobe between the seasons.

Going to the mall and big-box stores can quickly get expensive. Thrift and consignment stores can help you save money and get some new looks, especially if you follow these tips.

1. Shop during influx season.

You should shop when people are cleaning out their closets and these stores are getting overloaded. They get a lot of new items around Christmas because people get rid of what they didn't wear the previous year or gifts they can't return.

2. Keep an eye on stores' social media pages for updates on huge sales and new items coming in.

At places like Plato’s Closet, they have 90% off clearance sales four times a year. You can get text alerts so you know when all the sales are happening.

Also, by following a store’s Instagram or Facebook page, you can see sales updates and find out about new items that are coming in. With a lot of resale shops, you can comment on the Instagram post showing the new clothes and ask for them to hold the item so you can come and buy it that day. That can be an easy way to get first dibs on new, affordable items.

3. Ask staff for help when you're looking for specific brands.

Staffers often know their store inside and out. They usually know exactly where the things you want are and can help you get in and out as fast as you want. They might even have new items hiding behind the counter.

Here are some ways to make the most money selling the clothes you no longer wear:

1. Pay attention to how you bring your clothes in.

Bring your clothes in freshly washed, off of hangers and in a big bag or basket of their own. Stores look for stains, holes, owner's hair, pet hair and anything else that makes them not ready to wear.

2. Bring in clothes at the right time.

Stores often buy way ahead of time, sometimes as far as 3 months ahead.

3. Bring in a variety of clothes.

Check and see what's in greater need. While not all resale and consignment stores have a men’s section, the ones that do often are in need of more men’s clothes. Stores will offer cash on the spot for the clothes they need the most.

4. Don't be afraid to turn to apps.

Poshmark and ThredUp let you buy and sell gently used clothes too. On platforms like this, there are millions of items you may not be able to find locally.  You can also get email alerts on price drops.

When you're buying, don't be afraid to negotiate. Never take the first asking price. If you're selling, price it a little higher, expecting people to ask for a lower price.
