5-year-old girl dead, 21 children injured in Georgia after school bus crashes into tree

LIBERTY COUNTY, Ga. — A five-year-old girl is dead after a school bus crashed into a tree outside of Savannah Tuesday morning.

LIBERTY COUNTY, Ga. — A five-year-old girl is dead after a school bus crashed into a tree outside of Savannah Tuesday morning.

Georgia State Patrol said there were 22 children on the bus with multiple injuries after the Liberty County school bus ran off the road and struck a tree. The children were transported to Liberty Regional and Winn-Army Hospitals.

Officials said around 6:50 a.m. the bus driver, 62-year-old Evelyn Rodriguez, was driving down Ray Road near Highway 196 when she lost control and ran off the road into a ditch. After crashing into a tree, the roof of the bus caved in trapping Rodriguez. After she was extricated from the bus, she was transported to Memorial Hospital in Savannah.

GSP officials said the children range from five to 12-years-old. Parents of any students who may have been riding the bus are asked to please call 912-435-6965 for information.
