The brother of Philadelphia Eagles player Derek Barnett died in a hit-and-run crash in Nashville Tuesday morning, a person in the football program with the University of Tennessee confirmed to the USA TODAY Network - Tennessee.
David Barnett, 33, was killed in a two-vehicle crash reported at 3:25 a.m. near the intersection of Burkitt Road and Whittemore Lane in South Nashville, Metro Nashville police reported.
Patrick Abernathy, a player development coach for the University of Tennessee athletic department, confirmed the siblings' relationship. Derek Barnett played college football at the University of Tennessee.
Felipe Castelblanco, 47, of Smyrna, is charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication in the head-on collision that killed David Barnett, who lived in Nashville.
Derek Barnett, a 2014 Brentwood Academy graduate, was a two-time Mr. Football recipient for the school, posting a combined 108 tackles and 12.5 sacks during his junior and senior seasons, before going on to become Tennessee’s all-time sack leader (33).
He was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round (14th overall) of the 2017 NFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles.
