Coal miner killed in Harlan Co., Kentucky

The incident happened at 2:15 a.m. at a mine owned by Revelation Energy Mine.
Hubert Grubbs, Jr., 29, was killed during pre-shift repair work.

Harlan County, KY — HARLAN COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) - A coal miner has died after an accident in a Harlan County mine.

The incident happened at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday at a mine owned by Revelation Energy Mine in Cumberland, Kentucky.

The coroner tells LEX 18 Hubert Grubbs, Jr., 29, was killed during pre-shift repair work. His family told radio station WRIL a roller caused his death after a belt broke on a piece of a equipment.

Grubbs' body is being sent to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy.

Governor Matt Bevin issued a statement Wednesday via social media.

"Today, a young Kentucky coal miner lost his life in a tragic accident. Our hearts are broken for Harlan County. It is our fervent prayer that his family and friends will find comfort through the love and support of their fellow Kentuckians in the days, weeks, and months ahead."
