DA: 8 bombs, how-to instructions found at Morgan County blast site that injured 2

The TBI has joined the investigation after two people were injured in an explosion in rural Morgan County.

UPDATE April 6 at 5:30 p.m.: The Morgan County Sheriff's Office has identified the two people involved in an explosives situation earlier this week.

According to an incident report, Thomas Susak and Melissa Harris were injured when Susak was making a homemade firecracker with black powder in a pipe and it went off.

When deputies arrived on scene, Susak had flesh hanging from his hand and Harris had flesh wounds to her arm, stomach, and leg area. Both were transported to the hospital.

The incident report said local, state, and federal charges were pending.

UPDATE April 5 at 1 p.m.: Authorities called to the scene of a Morgan County pipe bomb blast late Wednesday found eight other bombs, according to Morgan County District Attorney General Russell Johnson.

In a release Thursday afternoon, Johnson also said investigators found five safes containing more than $1,000 in cash, guns, methamphetamine and suboxone. A search warrant was served on the residence and area structures at 615 Island Ford Road in Lancing.

The search also yielded an AR-15 and a pistol.

Along with the eight bombs or "explosive devices", deputies found multiple bomb-making components and instructions on how to build bombs. Also found: 2 pounds of Tannerite, a binary explosive, and other chemicals, according to Johnson.

The names of the man and woman injured in the blast at the scene have not been released. Both were being treated at a hospital, although their injuries were not consider life-threatening. The man said that his girlfriend was pregnant when he called 911 to report the injuries.

The man suffered a "badly mangled" hand and the woman had injures to her arm, torso and leg, according to Johnson.

Federal authorities likely will become involved.

No charges have been filed because federal officials may become involved, according to the DA.

Investigators at the scene of a reported explosion in Morgan County, where two people were injured.

A 911 call around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night sent deputies to a shed on Island Ford Road near Lancing, according to Sheriff Glen Freytag. They found two injured people in the shed, then backed away from the building because they weren't sure how to deal with the explosives.

The Knox County Sheriff's Office bomb squad was called in to deal with the explosives.

Freytag said they also found guns and narcotics, but wouldn't reveal any further details.

There are still a number of law enforcement officers at the scene of the explosion.

Freytag wouldn't comment on any possible charges, but said the investigation is still ongoing. He said he was surprised to find a situation like this in Morgan County.

A neighbor told 10News that the man who was injured has made small bombs in the past, and has even posted videos on YouTube. She said the man and his girlfriend were both hurt, but did not have life threatening injuries.
