Vintage college colors sportswear store opening in Market Square

A new clothing store specializing in vintage college colors is set to open next month in downtown Knoxville's Market Square.

A new clothing store specializing in vintage college colors is set to open next month in downtown Knoxville’s Market Square.

Tailgate will open at 23 Market Square next to the Subway on Oct. 13.

The brand makes vintage-inspired clothing with local inspiration such as University of Tennessee logos. The store plans to create graphics that “speak to local businesses and communities in Knoxville” such as Sweet P’s Barbecue and Bearden Hill Fieldhouse.

Former Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Erik Ainge is Knoxville’s local ambassador for Tailgate.

Menswear designer Todd Snyder and his father founded Tailgate of their basement in Huxley, Iowa, in 1997.

Knoxville marks Tailgate's third store to open. The first is in Iowa City, Iowa, and the second opened in Madison, Wisc., in May.

American Eagle Outfitters purchased Tailgate in November 2015.
