Friday, some students got a hands-on lesson in gardening and sharing.

The students will learn about gardening through programs at the Y, then share the fruits of their labor with people in the community through food banks like Second Harvest. It's part of the YMCA's mission to help teach children life skills and serve the community.

"The young people learn what it means to raise a garden and also what it means to help others. And people coming by, I think they can see the young people working in it and see that this Y, of course, is interested in helping young people prepare for the future," said Dale Keasling,Home Federal Bank president and CEO.

Other YMCA locations in the Knoxville area also raise community giving gardens with new crops each season.
