KCS Superintendent suggests moving student day off from April to May

The change was suggested because May 1 is the day of the Knox County primary election, and many schools serve as voting sites.

Knox County Schools Superintendent Bob Thomas is proposing a calendar change this spring.

Right now, April 2 is scheduled as a day off for KCS students. Easter falls on April 1 this year.

According to the agenda for next week's Board of Education meeting, Thomas is suggesting the district hold classes on April 2 and change the day off for students to May 1.

May 1 is the day of the Knox County primary election, and many schools serve as voting sites.

Thomas said he's suggesting the calendar change to accommodate the 30,000 voters the Knox County Election commission anticipates for turnout, as well as for the safety of students and staff.

"Making these changes will eliminate possible safety issues and ensure voters will

have easier access to voting sites," Thomas said.

The board is expected to take up the proposed change at its meeting next week. Board members will gather for a work session Monday, February 12, and a regular meeting on Wednesday, February 14.
