There's an 'art' to helping patients heal at East Tennessee Children's Hospital

Each work of art serves a distinct purpose.

There’s an art to helping patients heal at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. It lines the walls and hangs from the ceilings.

“I was a little intimidated at first, but I wanted to be a part of it,” said artist Marissa Ray.

Ray is one of the artists involved in the ‘Art of Healing’ program that uses artwork to uplift patients and families at the hospital.

“It’s very moving to me. I have a nine-year-old son, so to be part of the healing arts project is very emotional, and I’m glad to be part of it,” Ray said.

Ray’s piece is called, ‘Grandma Spider brings the sun.’

“It’s six panels, and it’s based on the story of the Cherokee Indian tale,” Ray said.

It’s just one of several pieces on display at the hospital. There’s also a hand-cut paper castle called, ‘Just Imagine,’ that was installed earlier this year. The pieces may be beautiful to look at, but the mission behind them is to bring hope to those who need it most.
