Volunteers honor fallen heroes at the East Tennessee Veterans Memorial

More than 6,400 service members from East Tennessee made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Volunteers read the names of the fallen at the East Tennessee Veterans Memorial in World's Fair Park starting Monday at sunrise.

More than 6,400 service members from East Tennessee made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation.

Each volunteer read approximately 75 to 100 names out loud.  There was not a sign-up to read.

33 names of East Tennessee veterans were added ahead of Memorial Day.

Most of the names added are of World War I veterans along with a few peacetime names.

"They have sons and daughters and family members who have some peace and some solace knowing that their loved ones their volunteers, their service members are going beyond the cemetery that they are here with other heroes," said Tim Eichhorn, of East Tennessee Veterans Memorial.

After the reading of the names, American Legion Post 2 held its annual Memorial Day Service.
