Jefferson Co. votes not to let Parrott's Chapel leave

The Parrott's Chapel community on the south side of Douglas Lake has said they want to succeed from Jefferson County and join Sevier County so they have access to better services.

The Jefferson County Commission has voted not to allow Parrott's Chapel to leave the county.

Two-thirds of the commission would have needed to vote yes in order for the succession to be approved.

During their meeting Monday night, 13 commissioners voted no and 7 voted yes. One commissioner was absent.

When TVA built Douglas Dam in the 1940s, it cut the Parrott's Chapel community off from the rest of Jefferson County.

Over the past several months, people living in Parrott's Chapel have been gathering support for their plans to move, saying they don't currently receive the quality of services they would like to see.

Jefferson County Commissioner Terry Dockery said he was disappointed with Monday night's vote, but feels confident the county will work to get the community better access to services.

He said after the vote, the commission discussed working with Sevier County to provide mutual aid to the Parrott's Chapel community.
