(WBIR) Rocky Houston will spend the next 9 years in prison after a federal jury convicted him on a federal gun charge
At the start of Thursday's sentencing hearing, Houston fired his lawyer and defended himself.
The federal judge gave Houston the maximum sentence: about nine years in prison and three years supervised release. During his supervised release, Houston must get mental health treatment.
In March, a federal jury took less than two hours to find Houston guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
U.S. Marshals arrested Houston and his brother Leon in January 2013.
In November 2013, a jury acquitted Leon of using illegal drugs while possessing guns. A jury later found him guilty of threatening his former attorney. He was sentenced to five years behind bars.
The Roane County siblings have a long history of run-ins with the law.
For more than a decade, the brothers have faced various criminal charges and subsequently filed lawsuits against government officials, claiming they're victims of persecution.
The two were also tried but not convicted of murder after a deadly shootout on their family property, killing a Roane County deputy and his friend riding along in the vehicle.
