Knoxville's oldest business, Mayo Garden Center, celebrates 140 years

"We're kinda trying to keep it going as we've always been known for. For our great customer service, our quality of items, and just being part of the Knoxville community," Cox said.

The oldest business in Knoxville just celebrated another birthday.

The Mayo Garden Center in Bearden turned 140 years old this week.

Owner Elizabeth Cox, who has been part of the business for 25 years, says the family-owned business started as a seed and grocery store.

She says the garden center is always looking for ways to expand but she says it is important to continue to provide the things the community counts on.

"We're kinda trying to keep it going as we've always been known for. For our great customer service, our quality of items, and just being part of the Knoxville community," Cox said.

The first Mayo Garden Center opened on Gay Street in 1878. Today there are a total of 5 stores in East Tennessee.
