KNOXVILLE, Tenn — City leaders focused on the progress made in helping the homeless population in Knoxville and how to get more people off the streets.
Mayor Madeline Rogero said a big focus right now is the housing first model.
The homelessness roundtable talked about new affordable housing and permanent, supportive housing projects being built now.
Mayor Rogero said they also discussed how different organizations in the community collaborate to help.
"There's a lot of good work in this community being done by a lot of different partners including the faith community, and I feel good about that, but we obviously still have a long way to go," Rogero said.
Mayor Rogero said another big project is the low-barrier shelter at the empty salvation army thrift store building.
It's partnering with Volunteer Ministry Center on the project.
It's set to be complete by November.
