Local children get to 'Shop with a Cop' in Blount County

"This year's Shop with a Cop event is one of the best we've ever held," Jarrod Millsaps, President of Shop with a Cop of Blount County and the F.O.P Bud Allison Memorial Lodge #9 said.

Around 100 law enforcement officers representing agencies in Blount County took 76 children shopping for Christmas gifts for themselves Saturday morning.

As part of the annual "Shop with a Cop" event, each child was given $150 to spend.

According to the Blount County Sheriff's Office, some of the county's underprivileged and at risk children ages 6 to 10 were invited to attend the event.

"This year's Shop with a Cop event is one of the best we've ever held," Jarrod Millsaps, President of Shop with a Cop of Blount County and the F.O.P Bud Allison Memorial Lodge #9 said.

The 28th annual event took place at the Walmart in Alcoa.

Shop with a Cop of Blount County started in 1989 with local law enforcement coming together to help one child. Since then, the event has grown to sponsor anywhere from 75 to 100 children each year depending on need and funding.

"We had one of the largest turnover of officers ever, and everyone had a great time," Millsaps said. "Thank you to everyone who came out to volunteer this morning, and to the businesses and individuals who donated money."
