OLIVER SPRINGS, Tenn. — A man died in a gliding accident off Smith Road in Oliver Springs Saturday.
A Sonex glider crashed approximately 100 yards from the Oliver Springs Airport around 5:40 p.m. Saturday. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, they were notified of the crash around 7:30 p.m.
The Anderson County Sheriff's Office said deputies were investigating what happened but said Patrick Lucas, 45 of Morristown, passed away a little before 5:40 p.m. on Saturday night.
The National Transportation Safety Board will determine the probable cause of the accident, which can take a year or more, according to the FAA. A preliminary report is expected in a couple of weeks.
Editor's note: This article previously said the man was on a hang glider per a release from the Anderson County Sheriff's Office. The FAA has since said it was not a hang glider, which isn't an aircraft and isn't regulated by the FAA, but a Sonex glider.
