ROAN MOUNTAIN, Tenn. — Carter County officials said someone discovered a body on the Appalachian Trail.
Officials said the coroner was dispatched to recover a man's body after investigators were notified around 2 p.m. Monday.
A search team had left the Carvers Gap area earlier Monday evening along the Tennessee and North Carolina state line.
The Carter County Sheriff's Office identified the body Tuesday as 53-year-old David Swanson from North Carolina.
A preliminary autopsy report released Tuesday shows he died of cardiac arrest.
