TBI: Off-duty Monroe Co. deputy shoots, kills thief outside of home

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating a Friday morning fatal shooting outside of an off-duty Monroe County reserve deputy's home.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating a Friday morning fatal shooting outside of an off-duty Monroe County reserve deputy's home.

The deputy observed a man attempting to steal some of his property on Chestua Road before a confrontation between the two men, according to a news release from a TBI spokesperson.

David Scott Winkler, 44, then attempted to hit the deputy with his vehicle, according to the release. The deputy shot at Winkler's vehicle and struck him at least once.

Crews took Winkler to the Sweetwater Hospital where he died. Authorities will perform an autopsy on Winkler's body at the Regional Forensic Center in Knoxville.

Authorities have yet to release the deputy's name as of 1:30 p.m. ET Friday.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office received a call about the shooting around 4:20 a.m. Friday.

The TBI will share its findings with the District Attorney General.
