The final journey of a World War II soldier to his resting place in Hawkins County, Tennessee is complete.
The remains of Pfc. Lewis Price arrived Friday night just after 7:30 p.m. at Tri Cities Airport.
Price was unaccounted for following weeks of combat in the Hurtgen Forest in Germany while serving in the 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division. He was 23 years old.
“It is unimaginable to think of losing a loved one in the chaos of combat and not know for generations where he is buried or if he will ever be found,” Governor Bill Haslam said in a statement. “Lewis has finally been found and we are proud to recognize his sacrifice and pause in honor of his homecoming back to Tennessee.”
Price's formal burial will take place on Dec. 14 at the Highland Cemetery in Rogersville. Haslam has declared a statewide day of mourning that same day.
