Monday, the US Mint issued a Cumberland Gap National Park quarter. It is part of the Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarters Program. On the tails side of the coin, it shows a frontiersman looking west in front of mountains.

People gathered Monday at the park’s visitor center in Kentucky for an event celebrating the quarter release.

“We've created a quarter that represents the frontiership of the pioneers passing through the doorway to the west right here at Cumberland Gap National Park so it honors our history, it honors the men and women that made the trip and shows the pioneering spirit of our country,” said Marc Landry from the U.S. Mint.

The quarter began circulation Monday. The Cumberland Gap quarter is the second one released this year and the 32nd in the program.
