Single-screen movie theatre, Central Cinema, now open in Happy Holler

They plan to show classic movies, silent films, documentaries, and other films you probably won't see in other theatres. The staff wants to emphasize the importance of the movie-going experience.

Get your popcorn! A movie theatre in Happy Holler is set to open Thursday night.

Central Cinema is a single-screen movie theatre. The chairs were donated by a theatre in Asheville.

Donors got to pick a favorite film to decorate the arms.

In the back, there's a lounge area with snacks and beer.

They plan to show classic movies, silent films, documentaries, and other films you probably won't see in other theatres. The staff wants to emphasize the importance of the movie-going experience.

“There's lots of good movies that are coming out that don't ever make it to Knoxville,” says programming director William Mahaffey. “And then there's all the classics that you can watch at home on your DVD or on Netflix, but it's just not the same experience. It's meant to be on a big screen, with loud sound, and with an audience surrounding you.”

Central Cinema will show a brand new independent horror film called "Our House" Thursday at 7 p.m. and 9:15 p.m.

Raiders of the Lost Ark, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Wild at Heart, and Summer of 84 will be shown over the weekend.
