Your wallet likely took a bit of a hit last time you stopped at the pump.

Right now, Tennessee's average gallon costs $2.55 cents. That's up nearly 20 cents in the last month.

Part of the increase comes from a shift to summer fuel which burns cleaner, but costs more to produce.

AAA spokeswoman Stephanie Milani said she expects prices to plateau at this peak in the coming weeks but she adds that global events could cause another spike.

"I don't even want to say it, but if there's a hurricane brewing in the gulf, or if those prices react to some geopolitical tensions, we could see gas prices go a little bit higher," Milani said.

Tennessee is still home to some of the cheapest gas prices in the country. Out west, some states are paying as much as $3.50 per gallon.
