The many faces of the rock during Tennessee's 2017 football season

The rock at UT has been painted too many times to count this football season.

The rock on UT's campus has had many faces over the past few weeks.

On Thursday morning, WBIR confirmed Jeremy Pruitt was set to take over as the new head football coach. At the time, the rock had not been changed.

It was graffiti'ed with a variety of hashtags and statements.

After an unprecedented coaching search finally came to an end at Tennessee, Vol fans returned to give the rock a new paint job.

Pruitt, who has been Alabama's Defensive Coordinator, will be formally named the 26th head coach for the Tennessee Vol football program at 6:05 p.m. Thursday.

A deal was reached between the coach and the University after much discussion on Wednesday night, which was confirmed with WBIR's sources.

Since Butch Jones was fired, the fan base has had some strong opinions about who should fill his shoes long term.

On Monday, that appeared to be Les Miles or Tee Martin. This comes after UT named Phillip Fulmer as its Athletics Director Friday morning and placed John Currie on paid leave.

Fulmer said he wants to be a "stabilizing and unifying force" while leading the University of Tennessee's Athletics Department.

For more than 50 years, students have been painting the 97.5-ton slab of Knox dolomite stone.

UT student, Payton Miller, has painted The Rock every Friday night of football season since her sophomore year.

However, when the Vols' football season started to go downhill, the fans took over.

The many faces of the rock this football season seems to have started in mid-September after fans angry over the loss against Florida painted it white with the words "FIRE BUTCH NOW!". And that he was.

'FIRE BUTCH NOW!' was painted on the rock at UT overnight.

Once Jones was fired, rumors grew on UT's campus about a chance of Jon Gruden coaching Tennessee's football team.

The so-called "Grumors", or Gruden rumors, only grew even more plentiful.

The conversation shifted towards firing John Currie when Greg Schiano's name was mentioned as an option to be UT's next head coach.

The hashtag calling for Currie to be fired remained even when some fans decided to spread a positive message: "HAPPY HOLIDAYS" and "GO VOLS!!"

Last week, the rock was painted with "BRING THE MULLET to Knoxville #Gundy #FireCurrie." You'll notice "#FireCurrie" is still there.

While that may be the gist of it, let's not forget that at one point in the coaching search, it said "BRING LANE HOME" and "WELCOME TO THE TENNESSEE BROWNS."

As you can see, the rock doesn't look clean and polished as it has in the past. Maybe that will change once a new head coach is named.
