Truck carrying 6,500 chickens crashes in Oak Ridge, unknown number lost

The crash happened around 8:30 p.m. Monday.

Oak Ridge — A semi-truck heading south on South Illinois Avenue in Oak Ridge veered off the road and flipped over around 8:30 p.m. Monday, a news release from City of Oak Ridge Communications Specialist Sarah Self said.

The truck was carrying approximately 6,500 chickens; when it crashed several of the holding pens broke free from the truck, the release said.

An unknown number of chickens were lost in the crash, which closed the road for several hours until specialized personnel and equipment could get to the scene, the release explained, including crews from TDOT, the Oak Ridge Fire Department and Oak Ridge Animal Control.

Oak Ridge Police are still investigating the crash's cause.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

The accident happened near Bethel Valley Road.
