UT Homecoming Committee collecting gift cards for Knox County students

University of Tennessee students are collecting gift cards during Homecoming week to help kids in three Knox County Schools need get items they really need.

The Student Homecoming Committee is collecting the gift cards and monetary donations through next week. They're asking for people to donate cards for large retail stores like Wal-Mart or Target, so students have money to buy things like clothing, groceries and everyday essentials.

"This way students can get a gift card to say Wal-Mart so if they need clothes - they can go buy clothes they need, food - they can buy food they need, school supplies - they can get school supplies," said Homecoming committee member Sam Brewer. "It's not like we're just donating food. Maybe that's what they have, but maybe they don't have the ability to go out and get other supplies they need."

The collection lasts through Friday, Nov. 4.

Donation boxes are located at the front desk of the following buildings:

  • Every residence hall
  • Center for Student Engagement
  • Sorority Village Center
  • Frieson Black Cultural Center

The gift cards and monetary donations will be donated to the following schools:

  • Pond Gap Elementary School
  • Vine Middle Magnet School
  • Fulton High School
