VIDEO: Lifeguards save man suffering heart attack at YMCA

While their boss is calling the two teens heroes, they say they don't want any extra attention — they were just doing their jobs.

A man who collapsed while having a heart attack at an East Tennessee YMCA is alive and well thanks to the help of two teenage lifeguards.

The man was working out on the treadmill at the Northside YMCA in Halls on April 4 when he suddenly collapsed.

Security video from the YMCA shows the terrifying moment. It also shows Hunter Woods and Joseph Sheppard, two teenage lifeguards on duty, run from the pool to the workout room.

“I don’t think we really had time to think about what was going on in our minds. It was more just seeing everything we had to do and getting it done," said Woods, a Junior at Halls High School.

“My principal announced it over the intercom. That was one of those things that was a little embarrassing, makes you blush.”

Seven minutes of chest compressions and an AED shock brought the man back to life before paramedics arrived.

“When I started chest compressions I was like I’m not going to stop until somebody else gets here," said Woods.

While their boss is calling the two teens heroes, they say they don't want any extra attention — they were just doing their jobs.

“That’s just our job. It’s what we were hired to do," said Sheppard. “It gives you a different perspective on the job. Makes you take it a lot more seriously.”

Their Boss, Aquatics manager Julie Walker, says she is proud of her employees.

"I don’t have anything but good things to say about them besides being heroes," she said. "I know that they were just doing their job and what they were trained but what they did was awesome.”

The man who collapsed is at home and recovering.

Joseph and Hunter say they hope to meet him soon in a more relaxed setting.
