April the Giraffe's baby to celebrate first birthday this weekend

April the Giraffe's baby Tajiri will be celebrating his first birthday the same way he was born: Live in front of the world.

On Sunday, one of the most popular giraffe families will be celebrating the first birthday of the baby that captivated people for months on live streams across the world.

April the Giraffe fittingly gave birth to her baby Tajiri in the month of April -- the morning of April 15, 2017 at Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, N.Y. to be exact.

While the live birth was one of the most watched events of 2017, it was the months of waiting and monitoring live streams a very pregnant April that became remembered as one of the most inexplicably captivating phenomenons of last year.

The wait lasted weeks upon weeks, and while some peoples' patience was tested -- many others welcomed the opportunity to monitor April the Giraffe while making new friends along the way.

One such group of friends formed in the live feeds on WBIR's Facebook page. More than a year later, they are still actively friends -- sharing April and Taj updates from AAP and other baby animal live streams on the Friends of April the Giraffe and WBIR Facebook group.

To celebrate Taj's birthday, the crew at AAP are holding a very special birthday bash edition of its live Giraffe Cam with April, Taj and Oliver at 10 a.m. Sunday. The park said Taj wil enjoy a special cake, enrichment items and other treats and is letting people sponsor gifts for the birthday boy.

Taj has done a lot of growing in a year, and his life will likely see some big changes soon. Once he's fully weened from April, he will need to be separated from mom and dad -- possibly at a new facility.

The one question on everyone's mind right now: Could April be ready to welcome another calf into the world?

NBC's Kristen Dahlgren went to Animal Adventure Park Friday morning during The Today Show and spoke with park owner Jordan Patch. He hinted it's more than a possibility.

"Certainly her and Oliver have 'gone a few dates' this past year, and by all means they certainly could have been successful," he said.

Only April really knows, but we might be in for another #giraffewatch in the near future.
