The Knoxville Police Department said charges are pending for a driver who admitted to taking his eyes off the road to find his cellphone moments before a fatal crash on Tuesday afternoon.
Charles Gouffon Jr., 45, of Knoxville admitted to a police officer that he was trying to find his cellphone when his Kia Optima crashed into a Toyota Prius driven by Eleonora Larrazabal.
Larrazabal, 77, died at the University of Tennessee Medical Center while receiving treatment for her injuries.
The crash happened on Gallaher View Road near Middlebrook Pike around 1:18 p.m. Tuesday.
The Kia driven by Gouffon was headed northbound when it crossed through the center lane and struck the Prius headed southbound, according to a preliminary investigation by KPD.
Knoxville police said Gouffon was not injured in the crash.
Authorities obtained a blood sample from Gouffon, and it will be sent to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation lab for analysis.
