Update: GSMNP identifies 37-year-old Missouri man killed in Clingmans Dome Road crash

The road was closed for about 5 hours as emergency crews responded to the scene on Monday.

GATLINBURG, Tenn. — Update (7/16/19): Officials with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park have identified a 37-year-old Missouri man who was killed in a crash on Monday on Clingmans Dome Road. 

The driver of the vehicle, Timothy Patrick James McCauley, died from his injuries from the crash, a news release from GSMNP said. He was from Farmington, Missouri.

A passenger in the car, Angela Walker, 38, was flown to UT Medical Center by Lifestar, according to the release.

McCauley was driving a 2009 Chevy Cobalt when the car fell off the road and landed about 50 feet below.

The accident was approximately 1 mile east of the Clingmans Dome Parking Area along Clingmans Dome Road, the release said.

The road was closed for about 5 hours as emergency crews responded to the scene, according to the release.

Rangers, including the park’s technical Search and Rescue Team, Cherokee Tribal EMS, and Cherokee Fire and Rescue all responded.

Original Story (7/15/19): Clingmans Dome Road has reopened after a crash involving injuries that happened Monday afternoon.

Park Rangers and emergency medical service providers responded to the crash around 1:15 p.m. According to Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials, the road closed to all traffic for hours and a landing zone is being established for a possible life flight.
