Walk, run, bike! Knox Co. Greenway Corridor proposal meetings begin next week

The Greenway Corridor Study will evaluate roughly 65 miles of greenways within the county, but before any decisions are made county leaders want to hear from you.

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. — Soon there could be more places to walk, run and bike in Knox County.

County leaders are looking to add more greenways to connect communities and neighborhoods in South, West and North Knox County.

The county’s greenway corridor study will evaluate roughly 65 miles of greenways within the county at four different corridors. The first is Beaver Creek West, from Hardin Valley to Powell. The second is Beaver Creek East from Powell to the Gibbs Community. Also, the corridor in South Knox County from Sam Duff Park to Sevier County and Chapman Highway to Alcoa. The fourth study area is Northshore Drive from Lakeshore Park to Loudon County.

According to county leaders, these four corridors run through fast-growing parts of the county. There's also a great demand for trails in the area. And these areas in particular may be able to have sections of the trail built as part of commercial or residential developments.

Typical construction costs for paved greenway trails ring in at $1 million per mile.

For this project, the cost will depend on how many miles can be built through development or as a part of other projects. It may also depend on how much money the county will allocate toward greenway construction.

Here’s how you can have you voice heard on the project: attend a meeting.

The first public meetings will be held on June 5 and 6. You can join the discussion in Karns Elementary School on June 5 and at Northshore Elementary on June 6.

The county will host two more public meetings on June 11 and June 12 at Halls Elementary and Bonnie Kate Elementary.

Each meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m.

There will be more meetings to come, as well, but Knox County staff said they hope to wrap up the conversation by the end of the year.
