Coach Fulmer looks back at Vols' 1998 championship season

Twenty years later, fans wait to see if this year's team can bring home a new national championship title.

Twenty years after the Vols' undefeated '98 championship season, then-head coach Phillip Fulmer looks back at his team of destiny.

"It absolutely does not feel like 20 years, it feels like it was yesterday in a lot of ways," said Fulmer.

He'll never forget the Vols' 1998 football season.

"That was a special group of young men to be around," said Fulmer.

From that first September game against Syracuse all the way to the Fiesta Bowl against Florida State, Fulmer knew there was something about this group of players that could lead UT to the top.

"You could tell in off-season and spring, you know, they kind of had that chip on their shoulder and were looking forward to proving people wrong," said Fulmer.

And that they did, all season long.

Fulmer said after the win against Florida that year, he knew they could take the top spot.

But it was the Georgia game that made that clear to the players and the rest of Vol Nation.

"I really felt great in the stretch and they were very confident," Fulmer said of his players. "Not cocky, not arrogant or anything, but they were confident. Our team was very confident we could go and beat Florida State."

Twenty years later, fans wait to see if this year's team can bring home a new national championship title.

"Our team right now is in a different place and is looking for those leaders like we had and those guys that can make plays to help you win ball games," said Fulmer.

He said this isn't his team anymore, and he'll leave all the coaching up to Jeremy Pruitt.

"We're hopeful always that you're gonna be in a position to compete for championships," said Fulmer.
