Ice Bears fans make it rain teddy bears on the rink for children in need

Friday was the annual Teddy Bear Toss to benefit children in need.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Knoxville Ice Bears were trailing the Roanoke Rail Yard Dogs 2 to nothing in the second period Friday night when Lucas Lombardier scored the one goal of the night everyone was waiting for.

As the puck went in -- hundreds of teddy bears came flying into the rink like monogrammed caps after a hat trick.

Friday was the annual Teddy Bear Toss. During the event -- the first Ice Bears goal to be scored signaled the crowd to start making it rain cuddly bears.

The bears were scooped up to be given to local organizations and charities helping children.

"Throughout the year, players will deliver the bears to different kids in need and charities," said team owner Mike Murray. "It's our biggest fundraising night of the year."

Season ticket holder Alex Miller said the event is one of his favorites of the year.

"It makes me feel really good. I think everybody here -- that's why do it, to bring a smile to a child's face. There's really nothing better," he said.

On Saturday, the Ice Bears will be holding another long-awaited seasonal favorite: The Wiener Dog Races.
