Jeremy Pruitt talks first spring practice in pads

Head coach Jeremy Pruitt spoke to the media after Tennessee's third spring practice.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee football team continues their spring season, with Monday being their first practice in full pads.

The Vols offense impressed head coach Jeremy Pruitt.

"I thought our guys executed fairly well," Pruitt said. "Seemed to finish plays, much better holding onto the football, quarterback-center exchanges. Felt like we cut down some on our offensive penalties today, which I'm sure helps.

With Jarrett Guarantano as the head of the Vols' offense, Pruitt believes the experienced quarterback is having a good spring season as well.

"I think he’s got a pretty good understanding for what we’re trying to do through three days, which he should," he said. "He knows how to prepare. I think it’s been really positive. That’s the way the quarterback position should be.”

Guarantano started all 12 games for the Vols last season, throwing for 1,902 yards and 12 touchdowns.

After giving much praise to the offense, Pruitt shared his disappointment with the other two phases.

“Defensively I didn’t feel like I saw enough guys straining out there," he said. "Defense needs to find a way to get turnovers. Wasn’t real satisfied with our kickers today and our punting period. Didn’t kick the ball the way we would like to kick it. Really have to improve there."

Tennessee has 12 more spring practices before the Orange & White game on April 13.
