KPD identifies Knoxville motorcyclist killed on I-275 after flipping into path of oncoming vehicle

KPD said a motorcyclist died after they lost control and hit the center barrier, flipping into the path of an oncoming SUV in the northbound lane.

The Knoxville Police Department has identified the motorcyclist who died Thursday evening after he lost control on I-275.

KPD said James S. Derrick, 36, of Knoxville, lost control while driving southbound in the right lane and hit the center barrier, flipping over it and landing on the northbound side of the interstate before an oncoming SUV hit them.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash closed down I-275 North for hours Thursday night. A multitude of vehicles, from semi-trucks to cars, were all stopped at the site of the crash.

According to the Knoxville Police Department, the interstate was closed from I-40 to Heiskell Avenue as crews responded at Woodland and Oldham Avenue near Exit 1.

Northbound traffic was detoured around that section for hours as they cleaned up the scene and had forensic teams investigate the circumstances of the crash. The road reopened around 8:20 p.m.
