KPD: School bus crashes into truck, forcing it over I-40 median

A school bus is involved in the accident, but no children were on board.

Update 4 pm: The accident has been cleared and traffic is moving smoothly in the area.

The drivers of a school bus and pickup truck are being treated after an accident on I-40 at the Hall of Fame exit sent both of them to the hospital Thursday afternoon.

Both vehicles were traveling west on I-40 around 2:30 p.m. when the Knox County school bus, which was preparing to take the Hall of Fame exit, suddenly veered back onto the interstate and across all lanes of traffic, according to Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk.

The bus hit the pickup truck which traveling in the far left lane and forced it into the median wall, then up and over the wall and into the eastbound lanes.

Both drivers were taken to UT Medical Center for treatment, but their injuries didn't appear life threatening. There were no children on the bus, which is owned by Lynch Bus Lines.

Investigators do not know what caused the bus driver to suddenly cross all lanes of the interstate.

An accident on I-40 at the Hall of Fame exit in Knoxville is backing up traffic in both directions.

The accident at mile marker 389 in the eastbound lanes of I-40 was reported at 2:34, according to TDOT's Smartway Map. It is impacting the interior lanes of the interstate in both directions, through lanes are open and moving slowly.

A school bus is involved in the accident, but dispatchers say no children were on board.

TDOT estimates the crash will be cleared up by 3:30 p.m.
