GRAINGER COUNTY, Tenn. — A large sinkhole has closed a portion of Lakeshore Drive in Grainger County.
A TDOT spokesperson shared a photo that shows one entire lane of the road has collapsed. Geotechnical engineers are on their way to assess the damage and figure out how to repair it.
Dispatchers said the sinkhole opened up between Elkins Ridge Rd. and Tater Hill Rd. The road runs near Cherokee Lake, and it's well traveled. There are a number of side roads that drivers can take to get around the closed portion, but they urge drivers to be cautious on those back roads.
