State Street to close starting Monday for parking garage expansion

By summer, there will be 570 brand new parking spots in the heart of downtown Knoxville, but there will be some parking and traffic headaches while the work is being done.

Getting around and parking in one part of downtown Knoxville is going to get worse before it gets better.

Work on the $11 million dollar expansion of the State Street Garage started last fall and remains on schedule When it's finished, there will be 570 new parking spaces in downtown Knoxville. Until then, part of the garage has been closed, limiting spots for drivers to leave their vehicles.

In addition, parts of Central St. are currently closed because of a large construction crane that's parked in the middle of it.

In mid-January, that crane will move to State St., and that will create some new challenges, according to the City of Knoxville.

While Central St. will reopen, State Street will be closed for several months starting Jan. 21 to both drivers and pedestrians.

The pedestrian bridge over State Street that connects the garage to Gay St. will be closed in February. People who park in the garage will have to exit at street level and cross State Street at either Clinch or Union.

There will also be times where the main exit out of the garage onto State St. may be closed. Vehicles will still be able to exit through the north gate onto Union Ave.

The garage elevator will also close.

The project is expected to be completed in June.

Until then, you can download a free parking app to help you find the best place to park in downtown Knoxville.
