Victim, driver identified in fatal head-on, wrong-way crash on I-40 W near I-640 E ramp

Knoxville police said the driver of the car hit head-on has died, and the driver who was going the wrong way has life-threatening injuries.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Update (5/7/19): The Knoxville Police Department identified the victim of a fatal head-on crash from Saturday.

Darrell Guilliams, 56, of Knoxville, was killed after the wrong-way crash on Interstate 40 West near the Interstate 640 East ramp early in the morning, KPD said.

Kara D. Wakefield, 30, of Knoxville, was allegedly driving a black Hyundai Elantra east in the westbound lanes of I-40 and hit the gold Toyota Camry that Guilliams was in head-on around 5:30 a.m., according to the Knoxville Police Department. 

University of Tennessee Medical Center said Wakefield is listed in serious condition.

There were no other passengers in either car, according to KPD.

WBIR has learned Wakefield also is a defendant in a DUI case from Nov. 28, 2018.

Loudon County authorities allege they stopped her after seeing her driving about 90 mph and then slowing to around 60 on Interstate 75.

When stopped, warrants state, she admitted she'd had several drinks and had smoked marijuana.

Wakefield also said she had marijuana in the car's console, the warrants state.

She faces a court hearing in that case in Loudon County later this month.

Original Story (5/4/19): One person is dead and another has life-threatening injuries after a wrong-way crash on I-40 West near the I-640 East ramp early Saturday morning.

A black Hyundai Elantra was traveling east in the westbound lanes of I-40 and hit a gold Toyota Camry head-on around 5:30 a.m., according to the Knoxville Police Department.

Authorities said they found the driver of the Camry dead at the scene. The driver of the Elantra was taken to UT Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. KPD said officers found a dead dog in the Elantra. There were no other passengers in the cars, according to KPD.

The crash shut down the interstate. It did not completely reopen until after 10:30 Saturday morning. All lanes of I-40 West are now open.

The investigation is ongoing, and 10News will update this story with any new information.
