Should Knoxville start dreaming of a white Christmas?

Early models show the odds are low, but we're saying there's a chance.

Christmas is just around the corner, and East Tennesseans already have visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads.

But should we start dreaming of a white Christmas just yet?

We got an early taste of a winter wonderland on Dec. 8-9, but there is no guarantee Jack Frost will be nipping at our noses when Santa Claus comes to town.

What Are The Odds?

On average, only about 8 percent of Christmases in Knoxville have measurable snowfall. The last year with measurable snow was 8 years ago in 2010 when McGhee Tyson Airport recorded 2.5 inches of snow on Christmas Day.

We’ve only had measurable snow on Christmas in 12 of 146 years of records. If you average that out, that would give us snow on Christmas roughly every 12 years.
