Snow 'blankets' upper reaches of East Tennessee with snow

Roads are reopening around The Great Smoky Mountains National Park after crews worked to clear a blanket of snow.

Wintry weather swept through East Tennessee Wednesday night into Thursday morning, and while it didn't have much of an impact on most of us, the higher elevations saw brisk winds and a blanket of snow.

Newfound Gap Road closed as the storm approached the area. Officials closed the popular route between Gatlinburg, Tenn. and Cherokee North Carolina, at 5 p.m. Wednesday night. It reopened by 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

A two-mile section of US 441 between Park Headquarters and Gatlinburg had reopened earlier in the day after crews worked to clear out the snow that fell in the area.

Officials called the area a winter wonderland, but also noted that the snow can cause hazardous conditions on some roads. Drivers are encouraged to use caution as they travel through the area.
