Records: 16-year-old fired gun in fatal Powell shooting

A 16-year-old and two men have been charged with murder in the shooting death of 19-year-old Cameron Smith on Oct. 10.

Newly released records allege a 16-year-old boy was the one who shot and killed 19-year-old Cameron Smith following a car chase in Powell earlier this month.

A juvenile petition says Justin M. Gonzalez fired a 40-caliber pistol, killing Smith and injuring another man on Emory Road on Oct. 10.

Gonzalez has been charged with felony murder, possession of a gun during a felony and a juvenile in possession of a gun.

Gonzalez's older brother Jorge Ortiz Gonzalez, 21, and Cameron Brewer, 18, each face charges of first-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder in the case.

Investigators with the Knox County Sheriff's Office say Smith's friend, 20-year-old Lucas Halliburton, used $80 of fake movie money to purchase marijuana from Jorge Ortiz Gonzales on Oct. 6.

The Gonzalez brothers and Brewer then set up a drug deal with Halliburton on Oct. 10 with the plan to rob him, officials said.

Authorities said Smith had nothing to do with the previous drug deal, but he drove Halliburton to the Oct. 10 deal. When Halliburton and Smith arrived at the meeting, they tried to call the deal off and left, but the three other men followed them in a black Ford Mustang.

Investigators say the chase lasted for several miles on Clinton Highway and ended on Emory Road. Officials said the shots were fired from the Mustang in about the last 500 yards before the Chrysler Sebring Smith was driving came to a stop in the 2500 block of Emory Road.

Smith was killed and Halliburton was shot and wounded.
