Hundreds of flags dot graves of fallen troops at two veteran cemeteries in East TN

Dozens of people from local communities placed American flags on the graves of fallen troops for Memorial Day weekend.

Dozens of East Tennesseans started out their Saturday mornings by placing American flags on the grave sites of fallen troops for Memorial Day weekend.

Folks traveled to both veterans cemeteries in Knox County -- East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery off Lyons View Pike and the second cemetery location off of John Sevier Highway.

Members of the military, families, boy scouts and many other people all helped to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country's freedom. The East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery Director Kevin Knowles says Saturday's event was a reminder for the younger generations for the price of freedom.

"I just feel like the scouts, the young Marines, there are also a lot of children here... I think it's important for them to realize where our freedom comes from," Knowles said. "It comes from the sacrifices these folks make."

As folks continued to set flags along the graves of those fallen troops, Knowles said the freedom we have here in the U.S. is something to be cherished.

"This just represents the freedom of our country. These men and women who were interred here gave up their lives for our freedom. And that's something we need to cherish every day."

A Memorial Day service will be held on Monday at the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery off of John Sevier Highway on Monday at 2 p.m.
