Suspect in custody after fatal overnight stabbing in South Knoxville

(WBIR) The man who police say broke into a South Knoxville home early Friday morning and fatally stabbed one of his relatives has turned himself in.

KPD said Jeffrey Renard Waymond (also known as Jeffrey Chatman), turned himself in to investigators around 10 a.m., a few hours after police say he stabbed his cousin, Calvin Stinson.

Authorities said Stinson, 26, was asleep when Waymond forced his way into the South Knoxville apartment on the 4500 block of Joe Lewis Road around 4 a.m. Friday.

Waymond assaulted Stinson then went to the kitchen and grabbed a knife. He then went back and stabbed the victim at least once in the torso. Stinson was pronounced dead at UT Medical Center.

Waymond, 21, was charged with first degree murder, especially aggravated burglary, and aggravated domestic assault.

(WBIR) Knoxville Police are searching for the man who broke into a South Knoxville home and fatally stabbed one of his relatives early Friday morning.

According to KPD, the victim was sleeping when his cousin forced his way into the apartment on the 4500 block of Joe Lewis Road around 4 a.m. Friday.

The suspect assaulted his cousin then went to the kitchen and grabbed a knife. He then went back and stabbed the victim at least once in the torso.

The suspect fled the scene on foot. The victim was taken to UT Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The victim's identity has yet to be released until next-of-kin has been notified.

KPD said they've identified the suspect and are searching the area for him.

South-Doyle Middle School was put under a soft lockdown Friday morning as KPD looked for the stabbing suspect,10News confirmed with Knox County Schools spokeswoman Melissa Ogden. She said there may be additional officers at the school out of an abundance of caution as well.
