Authorities in Roane County have recovered a gun from a 15-year-old high school student.

Roane County Sheriff Jack Stockton said around 10 a.m. Thursday, School Resource Officer John French heard from students a 15-year-old student had a gun on school grounds.

The officer and principal approached the student in the cafeteria, where a hooded sweatshirt was sitting in front of the student. Inside, they reported finding a loaded .38 in the hooded sweatshirt.

Officer French grabbed the student from behind, and the principal grabbed the hooded sweatshirt and gun.

Stockton said the boy had gotten into a fight with another boy over a girl, and that he planned to shoot the other boy, then himself.

At this point, authorities don't know where the gun came from. The student has been turned over to juvenile authorities. No word on any charges at this point.
