A community activist, whom Hollywood made famous, is planning a visit to East Tennessee.
Erin Brockovich told 10 News that her mission is to help victims of the fly ash spill in Kingston. She said she plans to come to East Tennessee next week.
Hollywood made Brockovich a household name in a movie released nine years ago. The movie was inspired by her one-woman, hard-nosed investigative work. She exposed the poisioning of people living in and around Hinkley, California. Toxic Chromium 6 had leaked into the groundwater from a nearby utility. The settlement by the utility topped $300 million, the largest toxic tort injury settlement in U.S. history.
Brockovich continues her activism by "helping others in their time of need," according to her website.
Brockovich said members of the Kingston community asked her to come see the disaster firsthand and talk with them.
Brockovich has made similar visits to communities and families facing hardship around the country.
She is coming to Kingston with a law firm she consults for. She wants to take some of her own samples and try to answer questions. She'll be in town Thursday, Jan. 8 and Friday, Jan. 9, but is still working on the details of her visit.
