Dolly Parton celebrates International Women's Day 2018

Over the past year, women from all walks of life rose up in protests, power building and advocacy over issues of equality and harassment.

International Women's Day is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day is also a call to action through events large and small focusing on equality.

The first women's day was observed in February 1909. In 1975, the United Nations proclaimed the year International Women’s Year and christened March 8 as Women’s Day.

International Men’s Day is an annual event celebrated on Nov. 19 in more than 60 countries.

Barbie introduced new dolls earlier this week ahead of International Women's Day.

The new dolls include famed pilot Amelia Earhart, renowned artist Frida Kahlo and NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson. Modern role models include Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim and boxer Nicola Adams.

The second Knoxville Women's March drew more than 14,000 people to downtown on Sunday, Jan 22, 2018, according to Knoxville Police.
