Faith leaders, students react to school safety concerns

Faith leaders at WinterJam weighed in on the school safety debate after the Florida school shooting.

The deadly school shooting in Florida has many wondering where to turn next.

At least 10 East Tennessee students are charged after making threats at school.

Authorities across our area have been investigating threats since the Florida school shooting last week.

WinterJam is a series of concerts featuring Christian music that stopped in Knoxville Friday.

Thousands of teens and youth leaders attended the annual event.

"A lot of people bring it up now because it's become a common thing," student Alyssa Boswell said.

It's too common for these youth pastors and students.

"Even the teachers are bringing it up more," said Boswell.

"Some of the adults are like scared for us and everything, because they don't want the kids to get hurt or anything," student Melody Reed said.

The deadly school shooting at a Florida high school sent the nation into a debate about a response.

"We've been like practicing drills and stuff in case a shooter came to our school, we would know where to go," said Reed.

"Come up with as many new rules and laws as you want, that would do just so much," said UT student Daniel Rangle. "But the true change has to happen in the heart."

Church members from all over headed to WinterJam in Knoxville. But through the music, a response to the shooting is on people's minds.

"If you're loving the people you're around, that makes a difference," Trenton Street Baptist Church Youth Pastor Jonathan Jones said.

Jones tries to teach his students to care for everyone.

"If they would've showed them love, that would've showed them that there was someone who cared for them, it would've made a difference," said Jones.

And a difference is what Oak City Baptist Church's youth pastor Chris Moriarty hopes to make with his students.

"It goes to show, when a tragedy happens, we should be saddened by the events that happen, but that should strengthen our faith, and it should strengthen our courage together as Christians," said Moriarty.

The students all talked about how they'd heard about either threats at their schools, or walkouts in response to them.
