Honolulu authorities confirmed the identity of a Marine and Tennessee native after a deadly stabbing Saturday evening.

Honolulu authorities are investigating the death of a 23-year-old Marine who was found dead in Waikiki Saturday evening.

Authorities identified the man as Sgt. William M. Brown. He served as an 81 mm mortarmen, Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division based on Marine Corps Base Hawaii, according to a news release from the 3rd Marine Division.

Honolulu medical examiners say Brown appeared to have died from a stab wound in the chest.

The 3rd Marine Division says Brown joined the 3rd Marines in November 2012. He was promoted to his present rank October 2017.

"Sergeant Brown was a beloved member of 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines who had been with the unit for five years. He had qualities we value in our Marine non-commissioned officers. His death is tragic and the battalion joins his family in grief," Lt. Col. Steven Eastin, battlion commander, said in the news release.

The news release also says Brown was awarded a National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal to name a few.

Brown's death is still under investigation.
