Bird enthusiasts and members of the public had the chance to see hummingbirds up close during a bird banding session at Seven Islands State Birding Park Sunday.
Fifteen people were able to join birding experts at the park early Sunday morning as those experts worked to capture and band hummingbirds so they can continue to study them.
According to those experts, a lot is going on in the lives of hummingbirds at the end of summer, making it an important time to study the animals. Most of the birds are preparing to migrate, plus some are still in the process of breeding.
The majority of birds captured and banded Sunday were Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds, according to Mark Armstrong, who was doing the banding Sunday.
The park holds multiple bird banding events each year that are open to the public. The next public event will be held September 25. The cost is $8.
